Can you take Calcium and Vitamin D3 together?
D3 dramatically increases intestinal calcium uptake. Without adequate Vitamin D, even high calcium intake may not reach bone effectively.

Timing
Together with a meal.
How it works
Active Vitamin D (calcitriol) induces calbindin expression in the intestine, the protein that transports calcium across the gut wall.
Vitamin D increases intestinal calcium absorption from roughly 10–15% to 30–40%. This pairing is standard in osteoporosis prevention guidelines worldwide. Without D3, high-dose calcium supplementation is largely ineffective for bone health.
What to do
Take together with a meal containing some fat for D3 absorption. This is one of the most established supplement pairings. Most bone health formulas combine them.
Frequently asked
Should I separate Calcium and Vitamin D3?
This is an informational interaction. Calcium and Vitamin D3 are generally fine to take together. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption
Why do Calcium and Vitamin D3 interact?
Active Vitamin D (calcitriol) induces calbindin expression in the intestine, the protein that transports calcium across the gut wall.
How strong is the evidence for this interaction?
The evidence is strong, supported by multiple published studies and clinical data.
