Can you take Calcium and Iron together?
Keep these well apart. Calcium is one of the strongest known inhibitors of iron absorption, reducing uptake by up to 50%.

How it works
Calcium inhibits both heme and non-heme iron at the mucosal transfer step, a mechanism unique among mineral interactions.
Doses of 300–600 mg calcium are enough to halve iron absorption. Unlike other inhibitors that only affect non-heme iron, calcium also blocks heme iron. The exact mechanism remains debated but likely involves a shared intracellular transport pathway.
What to do
Take iron in the morning on an empty stomach and calcium later in the day. A gap of at least two hours is essential. Pairing iron with Vitamin C can partially compensate if timing overlaps accidentally.
Frequently asked
Should I separate Calcium and Iron?
Consider separating them. Separate completely, different meals. Consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
Why do Calcium and Iron interact?
Calcium inhibits both heme and non-heme iron at the mucosal transfer step, a mechanism unique among mineral interactions.
How strong is the evidence for this interaction?
The evidence is strong, supported by multiple published studies and clinical data.
