Can you take Magnesium and Vitamin B6 together?

Vitamin B6 appears to help magnesium cross cell membranes more effectively. Many magnesium supplements include B6 for this reason.

Evidence

moderate

Timing

Together, evening ideal.

How it works

Pyridoxine may facilitate magnesium transport across cell membranes, improving intracellular loading.

The Magne-B6 formulation has been studied in several trials and appears to provide better intracellular magnesium levels than magnesium alone. The typical companion B6 dose is 5–10 mg. ZMA supplements also use this pairing.

What to do

Take together. Evening is ideal since magnesium supports sleep. A small B6 dose (5–10 mg) is sufficient — mega-dosing B6 is not necessary and carries neuropathy risk above 100 mg/day.

Frequently asked

Should I separate Magnesium and Vitamin B6?

This is an informational interaction. Magnesium and Vitamin B6 are generally fine to take together. B6 may enhance magnesium cellular uptake

Why do Magnesium and Vitamin B6 interact?

Pyridoxine may facilitate magnesium transport across cell membranes, improving intracellular loading.

How strong is the evidence for this interaction?

The evidence is moderate. Some studies support this interaction, but more research may be needed.
