Timing
Together with a fatty meal.
How it works
Both filter high-energy blue light and scavenge reactive oxygen species in the macula, protecting photoreceptors from oxidative damage.
The AREDS2 study established the standard dose: 10 mg lutein with 2 mg zeaxanthin (5:1 ratio). Both are macular pigments that accumulate in the fovea over weeks of supplementation.
What to do
Take together with a fat-containing meal for optimal carotenoid absorption. Look for supplements that provide the 5:1 ratio from the AREDS2 study.
