Timing

Together with food.

How it works

Glucosamine provides building blocks for cartilage glycosaminoglycans while chondroitin inhibits degradative enzymes and resists cartilage compression.

The GAIT trial (2006) found the combination effective for moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis, though neither alone outperformed placebo for mild pain. Results typically take 8–12 weeks to become apparent.

What to do

Take together with food to reduce the chance of GI discomfort. Most joint supplements already combine them. Allow 2–3 months before assessing effectiveness.
