Can you take BHB Salts and MCT Oil together?

BHB salts raise blood ketones directly and immediately. MCT oil provides the raw material for the liver to produce its own ketones. Complementary timing profiles.

Timing

Together.

How it works

Exogenous BHB salts enter the bloodstream directly; medium-chain triglycerides (especially C8) undergo rapid hepatic beta-oxidation to produce BHB and acetoacetate.

BHB salts raise blood ketones within 30 minutes. MCT oil (particularly caprylic acid/C8) takes slightly longer but provides sustained ketone production. GI tolerance of MCT oil improves with gradual dose escalation.

What to do

Start with a low MCT dose (5 ml) and increase gradually to avoid GI distress. Take together or use MCTs for sustained levels between BHB doses.

Frequently asked

Should I separate BHB Salts and MCT Oil?

This is an informational interaction. BHB Salts and MCT Oil are generally fine to take together. Immediate plus sustained ketone elevation

Why do BHB Salts and MCT Oil interact?

Exogenous BHB salts enter the bloodstream directly; medium-chain triglycerides (especially C8) undergo rapid hepatic beta-oxidation to produce BHB and acetoacetate.

How strong is the evidence for this interaction?

The evidence is moderate. Some studies support this interaction, but more research may be needed.
