How it works
L-tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP by tryptophan hydroxylase, then 5-HTP to serotonin. Supplementing both floods the pathway from two entry points.
The risk of serotonin excess is lower than with 5-HTP + St. John's Wort, since both compounds feed the same pathway rather than amplifying through different mechanisms. Still, bypassing the tryptophan hydroxylase rate limiter is pharmacologically unwise.
What to do
Pick one. 5-HTP is the more direct precursor; L-tryptophan is gentler and also feeds other pathways (niacin, melatonin). There is no benefit to combining them.
